From the Designer: I started with some of Jared's favorite design elements in mind--garter stitch, chevrons, texture that really sings. Then I swatched our sample skein in a motif called Welting Fantastic. This stitch creates wonderful effects in Shelter--a scalloped cast-on edge, a feather-light and drapey fabric with enough spring to keep it from sagging. Its pairing of rising increases and falling decreases, and garter welts interspersed with stockinette bands, is reminiscent of the gently rolling terrain for which the Hill Country around Austin is named. The grassy green Tent colorway emphasized the resemblance to our local landscape, and the design's adjustable length adds some essential versatility (since 9 months of the year, it's way too hot to wear a below-the-knee wool dress in this town!).

Snowden Becker came to Austin for a PhD in Information Science, but stayed for the great yarn shops and brisket. Her designs combine vintage looks with modern wearability and often feature selections from her ever-growing collection of antique buttons. She blogs about knitting and librarians under the appropriate call number at tt820classyknitting.blogspot.com, and is TT820 on Ravelry.
