Student must bring their own loom to class, already warped.

Intricate patterning is possible on the rigid heddle loom! If you have ever wanted to know how to work more complex patterns on your loom this is the class for you. We will work through a small sampler in class and you will have the pattern and skills afterwards to complete a set of beautiful placemats that will add a handmade touch to your next dinner gathering.

Skills you will learn or review:

    basic hemstitching

    simple 1x1 leno

how to use one or two pick-up sticks to make a pattern

how to read a pick up pattern

    Prerequisites:

students should be comfortable warping their loom and weaving plain weave independently.

    Materials:

1000 yds of a laceweight cotton or linen yarn OR 500 yds of a sport/dk weight cotton or linen for the warp. (sample used 1 skein of Blue Heron Mercerized Cotton)

4 skeins of a spork/dk weight cotton or linen for the weft in a contrasting color to your warp (sample uses 2 skeins each of 2 colors of Tahki Cotton Classic )

Rigid heddle loom at least 15" wide (if you have a smaller loom you can make a table runner or mug rugs instead or ask us about borrowing a larger loom).

    10 dent heddle

    1-2 stick shuttles

1-2 pick-up sticks (choose a stick that is at least as long as your loom is wide

    Homework:

Please warp your loom before class as follows:

With a 10-dent heddle, warp 15-16.2” wide on the loom (150 - 162 ends) 118” long. This will give you enough warp for 4 placemats + a sampler.

If you are using a sport/dk weight yarn you will warp singly (1 strand in each slot/hole) if you are using a lace/light fingering weight yarn you will warp doubled (2 strands in each slot/hole).

Two things I recommend but that are not required: double up the outermost 3 ends (2 threads sport or 4 threads lace) on either selvedge edge (outermost ends) and use a constrast color (your weft color) for these ends.

Due to the continued lower risks of Covid-19, at this time we are not currently requiring vaccination to attend classes, however, if Austin re-enters Medium or High Risk guidelines you will be asked to either present a proof of vaccination, or provide a negative covid test to attend classes/camps. Although we are not requiring proof of vaccination at this time, you may still be asked to mask during class times if you are unvaccinated to accommodate any higher risk students or teachers.
