Most folks don’t think of wool and Texas in the same sentence. But Texas has been a major producer of wool and mohair since the 1850’s. It’s not surprising that in 1952 the Texas Sheep and Goat Raisers Association sponsored the first Miss Wool Texas pageant. Women from all over Texas competed for the title in San Angelo — the Inland Wool Capital of the World. In addition to the title, the lucky winner got an designer wool wardrobe and the opportunity to represent Texas wool all over the US. Check out this newsreel of the 1956 pageant.

In 1955, one of the finalists for Miss Wool Texas was Karen Gentry, who was Suzanne’s Aunt Kaybee. Her favorite aunt’s experience as the queen of wool was a frequent topic of conversation in Suzanne’s family.

When HCW had the opportunity to create an exclusive yarn for the store, we knew exactly what it should be — a Texas merino and mohair blend. And we knew what to call it — Kaybee’s Twist, as it combines both Texas history and personal history with a gentle twist of fiber.

We think you’ll love this loosely twisted 2-ply that mimics handspun in texture and creates a soft fabric that drapes easily at looser gauges, while giving substance to tighter ones.
