Level: Advanced Beginner/Intermediate; Students should have some experience spinning.

Instructor: Donna Coates

Class fee includes a $15 materials fee

The class is a study of fibers from sheep, camelids (camel, alpaca, and llama), and goats (mohair and cashmere).  We will discuss selecting fleece and preparing it for spinning and felting. We will also discuss commercially prepared fibers.

Topics covered in this class:

  • Discussion of fiber characteristics and fleece types
  • Discussion and demonstration of fiber processing techniques – combs, flick carders, hand cards, and drum carders
  • Students will experiment with all processing techniques and will spin samples on spindles or spinning wheels
  • Depending on time I will discuss plying

What to bring:

Instructor will provide all fiber for class and have a limited selection of tools available for students to work with.

Students may want to bring their own tools and equipment—wool combs, carders, drum carder, carding board, spindles, or spinning wheel.  I would also suggest a towel or some protection for your lap.
